Baldwin & Lyons, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in marketing and underwriting property and casualty insurance products primarily in the United States. It offers various fleet transportation insurance products, including commercial motor vehicle liability, physical damage, and other liability insurance; workers compensation insurance; specialized accident (medical and indemnity) insurance products for independent contractors; non-trucking motor vehicle liability insurance for independent contractors; fidelity and surety bonds; and inland marine products consisting of cargo insurance. The company also provides various additional services comprising risk surveys and analyses, government compliance assistance, loss control, and cost studies; and research, development, and consultation in connection with new insurance programs that include development of computerized systems to assist customers in monitoring their accident data. In addition, it offers claims handling services to clients with self-insurance programs. Further, the company accepts cessions and retrocessions from selected insurance and reinsurance companies, principally reinsuring against catastrophic events. Furthermore, it provides private passenger automobile liability and physical damage coverage products to individuals through a network of independent agents; commercial property and business owners liability coverage products through a managing general agent; and miscellaneous professional liability coverages through wholesale and retail agents.
