Q&A on Investing the Navellier Growth Way
- Louis, thank you for your advice thus far, it has been very profitable for me. I’m wondering though, how can we reap the reward of a great gainer if we must scale it back to keep all of our stocks even?
- I know that you recommend a wide diversification with around a 30 to 40 stocks in your Emerging Growth portfolio, but what if I decide to concentrate on your top ten picks only?
- How much strength do you give to each of your eight grading points? Do you give more to some and less to others? Thanks!
- What should I do if I own more than one of your publications and you tell us to tell a stock in one but not in the other? Should I still consider it a buy?
- I have been with you for several years. How do you recommend taking some profits off the table?
- Assuming that I stay properly diversified, do you recommend selling a “hold” or “buy” stock in order to have the funds to buy a “strong buy” stock? Thanks.
- Hello, I know you suggest keeping holdings at 60% conservative, 30% moderately aggressive and 10% aggressive, but after that does it matter if we invest all of our money into one sector (like agriculture) if we can still meet the 60%/30%/10% guideline? Thanks.
- Dear Louis, I know that you always recommend equally weighting stocks, however, there’s some obvious “winners” and “losers” in our portfolio. Of course I’m always tempted to buy the winners with both hands and leave the rest behind. Though, there’s always that possibility of a rally, or extreme volatility by doing so. What do you recommend?
- I notice that in Global Growth you buy ADRs. What are ADRs, and why are they important?
- How much money do you allocate to each stock on your Buy List? Do you offer different strategies for investors depending on how aggressive they are? For example, would you recommend that someone with a smaller portfolio be more or less aggressive or is it all about investor personality?
- What is growth investing?
- What's your opinion on options?
- How do you know when to sell your winners? Isn’t success all about knowing when to sell?
- Does growth investing work in a market downturn?
- Are we going through a rotation out of agriculture stocks and into technology stocks?
- Louis, a lot of financial pundits are suggesting the dollar is done sinking and will rise against currencies like the euro. Do you still see the dollar declining this year?
- Some commentators have been calling the current rise in the market a Bear Market Rally. How can we distinguish a bear market rally from a rally that signals the first leg of a new bull market?
- Why aren’t you recommending more pharmaceutical companies, healthcare companies or durables? It seems to be a general consensus that these stocks survive best during a recession. Thank you.
- Louis I would like to invest in the gold and other commodity companies you talk about; however, am I too late to the party? Is this trend still going to be good for another 12-18 months?
- Hi Louis, I’ve heard you say that we should all be invested by mid-May. What about a retired individual? Should we also be following this advice?
- How do companies control the cost of their coking coal? I see that in the U.S. this is a big problem. Thank you.
- I'm having difficulty seeing the logic, in such a volatile market, in selling one "A" stock and replacing it with another "A" stock. Are some “A” stocks better than others?
- In Quantum I’ve noticed that you have at least three stocks from the medical industry. Do you view this sector as a market leader with room to grow? Should I be buying more medical stocks, or is this a flash in the pan?
- You have an abundance of Food and Beverage stocks on your Global Buy List. What’s the reason behind this? Are there any other hot sectors you foresee us investing in, in the near future?
- Hi Louis, at present I am just a little more concerned about the Energy and Metal sectors. There appears to be heavy selling in all of these. What are your thoughts?
- Do you think we're heading toward a recession?
- Do you see any upcoming trends investors should be watching?
- Do you have a strategy on how to best protect profits when the market gets volatile? Should I start Dollar-Cost Averaging?
- Can you explain why stocks are getting hammered? What makes them so susceptible to downward movement in this market environment?
- There is so much talk about the “crashing” of the U.S. economy in the media. I believe that inflation is actually far higher than the government says. What do you think is the truth given the weak dollar?
- You’ve mentioned that you frequently overweight hot sectors on your Buy Lists in order to profit from Wall Street's hottest sectors. Is there any one sector I should be putting the most money into? In other words, could placing my bets on one particularly hot stock ever be beneficial?
- Why wouldn’t the Fed want to cut short-term interest rates? Are there any sectors that could be hurt by a rate cut instead of helped?
- Are you always 'fully-invested' in the market?
- How do you identify stocks that need to be sold because they are losers?
- What do you think the prognosis is for the stock market in 2008?
- The technology and telecommunication sectors seem to be thriving. Could this be more than just a trend? Do you have any particular tech recommendations for new investors?
- This question is about Raytheon (RTN). In spite of a recent good quarter and a relative recovery of the market, we are not seeing any movement in RTN. Other defense stocks are making good moves. Any thoughts on why RTN has stalled?
- I bought Deere on your recommendation, and have been watching it go down daily. They report on May 8th. Does the market know something I don't? Should I sell before earnings? Thank you.
- I recently bought DCO and GPRO per your suggestion and am pleased with their movement. What is your goal with these stocks? When should I consider selling them in order to make the most profit? Thanks.
- What is going on with SIGM? It was up recently on no news that I can find. I’m thrilled, but slightly confused.
- I bought FMC Technologies (FTI) as you recommended and it has done quite well. While reading their annual report, I found that they said that they will spin off the food and airport businesses around the middle of the year. Do you advocate selling spin offs, or will you offer an individual opinion when the spin off occurs?
- I am surprised to see that LB Foster (FSTR) is down so much after the recent earnings report. I did not see any comment about it in your last issue. Should I sell it or hold it?
- What is causing ISRG to tank after an excellent quarterly report? I don’t understand it. Thanks.

- Is it too late to buy POT and MOS? Thank you!
- Louis, could you share your current thoughts on GR? I’m worried about its future.
- Why does RIG continue to have such a low PE when its prospects seem so high?
- Dear Louis, I understand that consumer spending is down and money is tight for all of us right now. However, I’ve been having great success with Priceline.com (PCLN). Is there any rhyme or reason for this? Not that I’m complaining of course!
- Dear Louis, what are your feelings on Vimpel Communications (VIP)? Do you think it will rebound or should we cut it loose?
- What do you think about commodity prices coming down? Will or won't this have an affect on Monsanto’s (MON) earnings?
- On Feb 22, Michael Baker (BKR) lost 25% of its value, due to their announcement that they needed to re-state their financial statements for the first three quarters of 2007, and the associated news that Klafter & Olsen will be investigating their possible unlawful conduct. What are your opinions about this news?

- What are your thoughts on Sigma Designs (SIGM)?
- I have taken a huge hit on SunPower Corp. (SPWR). Are you still hopeful for a rebound or should we cut our losses?
- Terra Nitrogen (TNH) and Bunge (BG) had excellent to good fourth quarter earnings. Why did both stocks take a substantial hit?
- Louis, what are your current thoughts on the stocks related to the housing bubble? Are stocks like Lennar (LEN) and Countrywide Financial (CFC) on your radar at this time?
