Mosaic (MOS)

Louis Navellier:

Even though first quarter earnings season has just begun, several of my Buy List stocks have already seen great success. In fact, one stock has already reported a ten fold increase! My Blue Chip Growth subscribers probably already know which stock I’m referring to, as it’s brought them over a 163% increase in their portfolios since I first recommended it in October of 2007. Benefiting from strong global sales, the weak U.S. dollar and the fact that it belongs to the very hot agriculture sector, Mosaic (MOS) has earned its rightful place as this week’s stock of the week.

Mosaic is one of the world’s largest makers of phosphate and potash crop nutrients. With the continued high price of corn, soybeans, wheat and other commodities that are in short supply, agricultural stocks like Mosaic are continuing to profit. However, belonging to a continuously growing sector isn’t the only factor that boosted Mosaic’s earnings.  Even though the company is located in Minnesota, more than two-thirds of their business comes from outside of the United States. Though the U.S. economy has caught the flu, most other countries are experiencing nothing more than an occasional sniffle. And that’s nothing to sneeze about (if you catch my drift).

So just how well did Mosaic do during their first quarter? Well, excluding one-time items, MOS earned $0.99 per share—that’s even more amazing when you consider that in last year's first quarter it brought in just $0.10 per share! Analysts had expected Mosaic to report $0.95 per-share earnings, so the company posted a 4.3% surprise to boot!

Just this past Monday shares of Mosaic reached an all-time high, after a Citi Investment Research analyst hiked his price target following the company’s excellent earnings announcement.  If you’re worried that Mosaic has already reached its peak, go ahead and put that fear aside. With corn prices continuing to reach record highs, Mosaic isn’t going anywhere but up for the foreseeable future. As an excellent buy below $130, I highly suggest you dig into Mosaic with both hands.

I like your alert today on Goggle,I was thinking of going back in at $460,this kind of sell or don't buy information is worth your Blue chip service. Regards Bill Leone

Dear Louis, I have taken your advice and did my own homework for both Mosaic and Potash, and have done well, in this otherwise "difficult" to say the least, market environment. I also find your stock grader a great tool. I can hardly wait for the 24th, when Potash reports its 1stQ. Question: Any idea why DRYS (an "A" rated stock by the stock Grader) is not doing better in price? Is the fact that management wears too many hats, and (as I understand it) there is no Management Insurance to assure continuity, has anything to do with it? Your input will be greatly appreciated Thank you Peggy

I was late to this Mosaic party when I bought the stock on Dec. 19 last year. But I'm still up more than 46 percent! Go Mosaic!

Layne Fuller, 04.09.08:

I have been following Mosaic, Potash, Monsanto, and Terra Nitrogen. Looking at the fundamentals of each company and studying their grades on Portfolio Grader Pro, I feel Mosaic should have the strongest earnings growth and, therefore, the fastest price appreciation. Do you concur? What weight would you give each in the Agricultural Sector? Thank you for your great advice. Layne

Peter Bateman, 04.09.08:

Excellent choice. Since I bought Mosaic last fall, it has indeed risen 164%. Thank you for that one. You called it!

Michael, 04.09.08:

Louis It would be nice if MOS would split. Is there any hint that mosaic will split their stock in the near term. While I am thinking about it, I note their are several other stocks over $100 on the buy list. Do they all strive to be like BRK-A ;) I could be a whole lot wealthier if I had not taken profit after POT split but I did it in the interest of diversication. Thanks for all your great advice and stay healthy and happy, lots of folks are depending on your wonderful knowledge of the markets!! from your top booster. Mike
