The Bureau of Land Management took a lot of heat for placing a ban on new solar projects on public land due to concerns over the environmental impact of sun-powered generators. They worried that an environmentally friendly energy plan would hurt the environment! The freeze – which we mentioned in last Thursday's issue of What's Working on Wall Street Now – was in place less than a month before it was repealled.

This news bodes extremely well for solar energy stocks. First Solar (FSLR) and SunPower (SPWR), two stocks on my Blue Chip Growth Buy List, are poised to profit even more in the wake of this recent development. Although FSLR – the "Google" of renewable energy – has pulled back slightly from its May 14 all-time high of $317, the stock is still up 11.25% for our Buy List!

In other news, California regulators recently approved First Solar's contract to build the state's first thin-film photovoltaic solar power plant. And today (July 11), SunPower announced a deal to build two solar plants in Florida for utility Florida Power and Light (FPL) – another one of my Blue Chip Growth plays! FPL is up 9.35% for our Buy List and is set to head higher as we enter earnings season!

To meet U.S. electricity needs in the future, alternative energy sources still have a lot of ground to cover both in the way of reducing production costs and maximizing efficiency. The demand, however, is there. As the land bureau's decision to overturn its moratorium on new solar projects clearly points out, more Americans are seeing "green." People are looking for cleaner, more efficient ways to heat their homes and fuel their cars.
