Hear Bear Roar
The folks at JPMorgan (JPM) and Bear Stearns (BSC) must've had a busy weekend. This morning JPMorgan announced an amendment to its merger, boosting Bear's price per share to $10 (five times its initial offer). That certainly put Bear Stearns' shareholders in a good mood, and it helped Wall Street start the week on a strong note as well. The Dow finished the day 187.32 points higher at 12,548.64. The NASDAQ was up 68.64 points to end at 2,326.75.
Part of the market's "feel good" sentiment is due to some short-covering going on. With financial stocks leading the market last week, and homebuilders being one of best-performing industry groups this year, a series of short squeezes has propelled some of the biggest one-day rallies that we've seen in the past five years. But these rallies are often short-lived.
Short-covering rallies often flame out when the fundamentals take back control of the market. I told my Quantum Growth subscribers that I expect that the dollar will eventually settle down and soften, and with that, commodity inflation will likely reappear. The simple truth is, Wall Street is still a mess, so it simply pays to invest in the market's most fundamentally superior stocks.
One of the stocks I'm recommending to my Quantum Growth subscribers makes pumps, valves and mechanical seals for the oil-service industry. It's benefiting from strong infrastructure and utility projects around the world. In fact, it's up 77% in the past year alone!
