  • 04.16.08: A Look at the Current Market
Let's not kid ourselves. The economic picture looks bleak; so bleak, in fact, that even Ben Bernanke acknowledges that the US economy is heading into a recession! Unemployment is up and consumer spending is down, the latter dragging down with it the backlogs of most US industries. Consumers are wary about how they spend their hard earned dollars.
  • 04.04.08: Earnings Season: Reaping the Benefits of Investing Money
Tis the season. No, not that one. That season only comes once a year and you have to give everyone presents. The season I’m talking about is much better and involved investing money during a prime time in the stock market. It comes 4 times a year and WE get the presents! In fact earnings season is my favorite 4 times of the year. Most corporations, especially those here in the United States, report their earnings each quarter on a calendar basis, so every January, April, July and October we get earnings releases pretty much every day of the month that keep us up to date on the quarterly sales and overall earnings results reported by the majority of companies.
  • 04.04.08: Are we in a recession?
Financials are acting like a dead weight on the U.S. economy and the stock market. As banks struggle with rising defaults, especially on mortgages, the news media is pouncing on every chance it gets to spread fear and panic all over Wall Street. Investors are searching for a 'silver lining' amidst recession concerns.
  • 03.21.08: How to Invest Despite the Falling Dollar
The dollar is falling and consumer sales are slowing. Or are they? The United States is a huge market, but it's not the only market in the world these days. Emerging markets continue to expand, and their consumers are hungry for products and services from the United States. These markets are literally a billion-strong, and they're helping the companies we own in our Blue Chip Growth portfolio continue to grow and post record quarterly earnings. As you know, I expect the Fed to continue to cut interest rates here in the States well into April. This will cause the dollar to fall even more against other currencies. That means that the popular brands sold by our Blue Chip Growth leaders will be favorably priced and continue to grow worldwide.
  • 03.19.08: Stimulus Package: The President's Plan
In an effort to boost the economy, Congress and the White House have rolled out a tax stimulus package. The plan calls for more than 117 million families to receive tax rebates of up to $1,200. These rebate checks would go to low-income and middle-class workers, including those who pay payroll taxes but not income taxes. Families with children would get a $300 credit for each child. The rebates would be phased out for those families making more than $150,000 and would not be given to families earning more than $187,000.
